Superior efficacy observed in entomopathogenic nematodes applied in infected-host cadavers compared with application in aqueous suspension.

چکیده
Entomopathogenic nematodes (genera Steinernema and Heterorhabditis) can control a wide variety of economically important pests (Shapiro-Ilan et al., 2002), and are generally applied in aqueous suspension through a variety of agricultural spray equipment or irrigation systems (Grewal, 2002). These nematodes have also been shown to be effective when applied in their infected-host cadavers (Creighton and Fassuliotis, 1985; Jansson et al., 1993). Compared with application in aqueous, laboratory studies have indicated application of infected cadavers can result in superior nematode dispersal (Shapiro and Glazer, 1996), infectivity (Shapiro and Lewis, 1999), and survival (Perez et al., 2003). There remains, however,

Evaluation of application technologies of entomopathogenic nematodes for control of the black vine weevil.
Black vine weevil, Otiorhynchus sulcatus (F.), is a severe pest of small fruit and nursery crops around the world. These studies were conducted to determine the efficacy of three species of entomopathogenic nematodes (Heterorhabditis marelatus, Heterorhabditis bacteriophora, and Steinernema riobrave) applied in infected host cadavers or as aqueous applications for black vine weevil larval contr...

In the recant decade, biopesticides with entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) have been developed with using different methods and materials. But the production of such biopesticides has always accompanied by some limitations such as low quality o...
متن کاملEffects of a novel entomopathogenic nematode-infected host formulation on cadaver integrity, nematode yield, and suppression of Diaprepes abbreviatus and Aethina tumida.
An alternative approach to applying entomopathogenic nematodes entails the distribution of nematodes in their infected insect hosts. Protection of the infected host from rupturing, and improving ease of handling, may be necessary to facilitate application. In this study our objective was to test the potential of a new method of formulating the infected hosts, i.e., enclosing the infected host i...
متن کاملEffects of Culture Method and Formulation on the Virulence of Steinernema riobrave (Rhabditida: Steinernematidae) to Diaprepes abbreviatus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae).
The Diaprepes root weevil, Diaprepes abbreviatus, is a pest of vegetables, ornamental plants, sugarcane, and citrus in Florida and the Caribbean. The entomopathogenic nematode, Steinernema riobrave, can reduce larval populations of D. abbreviatus substantially. Efficacy of entomopathogenic nematodes, however, may be affected by culture method and formulation. Using D. abbreviatus as the host, w...
